Welcome to the Omokoroa Boat Club (Inc.)

The OBC has reciprocal rights with Mount Ocean Sports Club, (MOSC) Bowentown Boating and Sports Fishing Club (BBSFC) and Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club.
Some club history highlights

Prior to me joining the Omokoroa Boat Club in 1974, it had been in recess for eight years. They had over $800 in the club kitty, held by Warren Harrison, so a decision had to be made whether the club closed, or carried on. Alan Crapp and Murray Harrison (no relation to Warren) dropped off a newsletter to every home in Omokoroa, asking who wanted to join, and support the club. Thanks to them, the decision was made to restart the club.
We were then holding our meetings and social gatherings in the old smoko shed by the slipway. Then we held meetings and social activities at the old Omokoroa Fire Station. Members were talking then, thirty years ago, of having their own clubhouse. When I joined I met some of the older generation “club identities” and I enjoyed soaking up the knowledge they had of the harbour and areas.
Later we moved to Jim and Bev McGregor’s house on the Esplanade, which conveniently had a bar and basement. This was a very comfortable clubhouse.
Many times the club came close to calling it a day, as it was hard to hold members together without clubrooms, although we were able to use the Settlers Hall for any large function e.g. the annual cabaret.
After we decided to go for our very own clubhouse, many of us spent hundreds of hours with the Western bay District Council, harbour Board and the local Iwi, and then things began to gel. Many sites were discussed, one was the Omokoroa hall, then the Domain and when the foreshore was suggested we expected to be shot down in flames.
The fundraising began: full on with galas in the car park, formal dinners by our own Omokoroa chef John Houghton, raffles, fishing contests, cabarets etc. In between all these, we still managed to muster ten to twenty boats and travel to Kawera, mayor, and up the Wairoa River before the dam burst, and also the Bowentown Boat Club, who always made us welcome (sometimes too welcome to 3am, and we would spend the night there!
Water skiing was very popular in the 70s and 80s and we would moor off Matuhoa, Matakana, and up Hunters Creek and finish the day with a barbeque on the beach.
With the help of many local and Tauranga businessmen and donations of money and products and thousands of hours of labour from members, wives, and locals, the boat club was built. During Stan Hoskins and also my term as Commodore we became debt free. This was after three years. What a great moment for the club.
Thirty years later I still see the strong community support and obviously I see tremendous improvement in the facilities. The on going commitment of the club is a credit to the past and present committee members.
It is a pleasure to be a member of the Omokoroa Boat Club.

Club membership Rules
A reasonable standard of dress is required.
We encourage members to bring children to the Club but do ask that they are properly supervised at all times.
(Not applicable to short term members)
Members are responsible for guests that they bring in to the Clubrooms. A member may invite guests, but all guests must be signed into the Visitors book, which is located inside the Clubroom.
Any one guest will be permitted to visit the Clubrooms a maximum of three times only in one year before being invited to become a member.
A copy of the constitution is available from the secretary on request or can be viewed on the website.
Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 4pm. Other times as advertised.

Please note that the Club’s financial year runs from 1 July to June 30 and subscriptions need to be paid prior to the 31 July to gain a $10 discount. Any subscriptions that remain unpaid after the 31 August will be regarded as lapsed. To rejoin after this date members will become subject to the nomination fee in addition to the annual subscription fee.

The Club does its best to make sure that all members receive a reminder that their subscriptions are due. This is in the form of newsflashes via e-mail and in the monthly newsletter. For this purpose it is important that you notify the Secretary of any change in your address, e-mail address or telephone number.
